Leica M11 Monochrom

Infrared with B+W 092 Filter

This page looks at the near infrared response of the Leica M11 Monochrom sensor. Using such filtration extends the useful range of capture tonal relationships.

The M11M places a UV and infrared-blocking filter over the sensor. This is done to improve general image quality by blocking wavelengths that would otherwise cause a reduction in contrast primarily by differential focus (eg longitudinal chromatic aberration). But it does allow near-infrared to pass.

One might posit that Leica should also offer the camera as a full-spectrum variant, blocking neither UV nor IR and thus offer a camera no other company does, short of custom conversions. Or an infrared-only or UV-only variant for that matter. But... dilettante custom finishes and collector trinket versions will surely take priority over useful capture variants.
